Christiaan Frederik Hoogendijk is the managing director of Natal Fertility Clinic Inc. and works as the laboratory director at the Natal Fertility Laboratory.

Dr CF Hoogendijk is a medical scientist in human fertility since 1999 and is registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Biological Scientist.  He completed his Doctorate degree in reproductive physiology and embryo biotechnology at Stellenbosch University (SU) under the tutelage of the renowned Professor Thinus F Kruger, who trained many reproductive physiologists, embryologists and reproductive specialists in the field of human infertility. For his PhD decertation he focused specifically on male sperm DNA fragmentation, novel methods for normal sperm selection and impact of sperm DNA on the development of the human embryo in vitro. He was awarded his PhD (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) degree in December 2007. In 2011 an opportunity for a brand-new fertility clinic arose in KZN.  Dr Hoogendijk was tasked with the design and implementation of a fertility laboratory capable of delivering consistent results for couples seeking fertility treatment. Currently the laboratory results compare to the best in the world and we are fortunate to have one of the most technologically advanced laboratories in South Africa.hidden content

Dr Jonathan Hansen

Medical Director and Fertility Specialist

Jonathan Nathan Hansen is a director at Natal Fertility Clinic Inc. and serves as Consultant Gynaecologist and Fertility Specialist in Dr Hansen Incorporated.

Dr Hansen graduated from the University of Natal, Medical School in 1977. He completed his specialist training at King Edward 8th Hospital in Durban, KwaZulu Natal and qualified in 1983 with fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the College of Medicine of South Africa.

He was admitted as a member of the Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in 1984.

He worked as a senior consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at King Edward VIII Hospital and as senior lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Natal, Medical school.

He moved to the UK in 1986 and trained as specialist in Reproductive Medicine under the supervision of Professor Ian Craft at the Humana Hospital and London Fertility Clinic (Harley Street) in 1986.

Thereafter, Dr Hansen returned to South Africa as the first Indian Fertility Specialist in South Africa and started a very successful private Fertility Practice in 1988 at St Augustine’s Hospital.  With a keen interest in clinical IVF, its accompanying ethics and profound passion to assist his patients, Dr Hansen soon became internationally and nationally known for his expertise in obstetric ultrasound, GIFT procedures, IVF, ICSI and PICSI procedures and laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis, fibroids, tubal pathology and correcting uterine malformations.

He is registered with the HPSCA as a sub specialist in Reproductive Medicine.

Lydia Els-Smit

Senior Clinical Embryologist

Lydia Els-Smit joined the Natal fertility team in November 2019 as a senior medical scientist with 12 years of clinical experience in human embryology.

 She completed her training and internship from 2005 to 2006 at Tygerberg Reproductive Medicine Unit under high-impact scientific leadership of Professors Thinus Kruger and Roelof Menkveld and Dr Marie-Lena (Windt) De Beer.  She attained her Masters in Medical Sciences of Reproductive Biology cum laude (Stellenbosch University) in 2008, studying the cryopreservation of ovarian tissue for cervical cancer patients.  A modified technique was developed, and more than 30 cancer patients has stored their ovarian tissue according to the protocol.  In her first 12 years of clinical practice, she was head of Laboratory at Wijnland Fertility Clinic, responsible for the successful start-up and implementation of andrology, cryopreservation, donor banking and IVF laboratory services including Time-lapse embryo selection for single embryo transfer.  In addition, Lydia is an active role player in the interest of advancing the profession of embryologists in South Africa.  She has served on the SASREG Board and the Special Interest Group (SIG) for Embryology Committee for 2 terms (6 years) being the SASREG Honorary Secretary and Chairperson of the SIG for the current term 2016-2019.  During her terms, she worked on congresses and specific projects like the SASREG Accreditation of IVF units in South Africa and promoted the growth SIG CPD events in KZN and Cape Town for the continued educational support for embryologists, IVF nurses and psychologists in the field.
